description Belly dance moves are characterized by differentiated movements involving individual muscles and body shaking. Therefore, belly dancers, especially instructors, require far more systematic learning to master the unique characteristics of each muscle movement and acquire accurate anatomical knowledge. However, although belly dance is a form of dance with expression through bodily movements, there is no specialized education on functional anatomy to inform the activities of field instructors and the use of the body by those who engage with belly dance. Author researched belly dance from the perspective of the functional anatomy of dance to write this textbook, and focused on the muscles used to implement basic moves in belly dance. this textbook examines belly dance from the perspective of the functional anatomy of dance and discusses three major characteristics based on the muscles used in basic belly dance moves. The first part addresses the terminology used for basic moves in belly dance, instructions on how to execute moves, information on basic bone and muscle positions, and illustration of muscle movements involved in belly dance, all of which are designed to enable easy understanding, even for novice readers. The second part focuses on the presentation of physical and esthetic effects that may be expected from the functional activities of each muscle used in the course of functional moves in belly dance. It also provides information that can be helpful in correcting posture through the proper execution of belly dance moves. The third part can help field instructors teach novices by incorporating knowledge on basic belly dance teaching methods through each move. I wrote this segment by drawing upon many clinical cases that I encountered as a field instructor until I prepared a curriculum for my belly dance instructor certification. This textbook is unique in that it focuses on systematized belly dance moves using anatomical theory through an academic approach. It prioritizes the functional anatomy of dance in order to facilitate an accurate understanding of belly dance movements involving different muscles. This textbook aims to enable field instructors to acquire basic knowledge of the functional anatomy of belly dance by presenting moves and motions according to accurate muscle positions in line with a combination of moves using illustrations. Reviewer’s note Young-Moo Na, MD (President of Sol Hospital, physician in charge of the South Korean National Team for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil) I accepted the responsibility to review this textbook on the anatomy of movement and functional anatomy based on the author’s research on movements in belly dance. Even for someone like me who majored in medicine, it is not easy to accurately explain movements from an actual anatomical perspective. It was very interesting and enjoyable to review the author’s work of organizing the anatomy of movement and functional anatomy systematically with professional knowledge of belly dance. This would have been difficult to do without an understanding of the specialized moves used in belly dance. Explaining anatomy, which can be highly specific and boring, by linking it to movements is very meaningful. I believe that such an effort is essential for people who are learning or majoring in belly dance. About the Author The author, for the first time in the world, studied belly dance by grafting functional anatomy, and published Belly dance Functional Anatomy. In addition, she serves as the president of the Hator Performing Arts Association, that issues belly dance instructor licenses registered as a state-run institution under the Prime Minister. She completed her doctoral course at Kyung-hee University and continues her research for the development of belly dance. Read more
